CD PEARL JAM LIGHTNING BOLT REVIEW

PEARL JAM

LIGHTNING BOLT

2013

JOINING THE DINOSAURS

Since when did Pearl Jam sound so ordinary?  On an album that tries like hell to sound relevant injecting a little punk into proceedings the radio singles stick out like sore thumbs. It’s not bad music, but neither is it inspiring or essential in the way that Pearl Jam always was, at least with some regularity, in the past.

‘Lightning Bolt’ will no doubt be bought by the masses but I doubt very much it will be listened to any more than ’Backspacer’; but where that album was fun, this one is depressing as hell. And in the hands of some bands angst has always worked well, Pearl Jam does it well but they don’t seem to have the passion any more.

We liked this in parts, and songs like ‘Pendulum’ and ‘Future Days’ are pleasing enough. But when you start to sound like Nickelback – like on ‘Sirens; surely it’s time to move on…

Pearl Jam came into being to shake up the dinosaurs, look where they are now… I’m sure the irony isn’t lost on them.
