HEAVEN IN THIS HELL

2013

TALENTED GUITARIST BIDES TIME...

To be honest apart from knowing that Orianthi is from South Australia, plays guitar in Alice Cooper’s band and has worked with both Prince and Michael Jackson I knew nothing about what an album of hers might sound like. I expected pop, I expected slick songs written by friends, great playing but a lack of Real soul. I mean how could someone so talented on their instrument and so relatively young and well…. a girl, actually produce a great record? To be honest at the end of the day I think I was about 99% right. She’s undoubtedly a great guitarist, has everything seemingly going for her, but listening to this it’s clear that she either doesn’t have that creative spark or she just needs more time. ‘Heaven in this Hell’ is not actually that bad an album, it’s just rather dull, offering no surprises and demonstrating remarkably little imagination, that you might imagine would have paid off when you consider the names she has worked with.

Sure it’s poppy, and Orianthi has a decent enough if rather bland voice but I won’t hold either of them against her. It’s the sheer generic nature of what in this case I’m more than happy to label as ‘product’ that really grates on me. Sure the first few tracks are rendered more than passable by some wonderful guitar but once we hit the middle of the album the pop becomes more dominant and you can imagine the songs having been conducted entirely by robots of samples. It’s all rather half-hearted and tepid really with definite lowlight being the wettest ballad I’ve heard in years ‘Another You’ which seems to only be able to hold itself together due to the weight of the clichés that wrap it together. It could be worse though – we could have started at track 4…
