BLUE ITALIAN SKIES

Nic Polimeno is an artist that I guess not many will be familiar with, and on ‘Gioconda Smile’ he has put together a very laid back blues infused AOR record that is at its heart pure feel good mood music. But of course there’s more to it than that. Opening track ‘Angel Eyes’ is all subdued guitar over a strong vocal, it’s a subdued blues from those twilight hours when you reach for that glass of red wine.

Keeping things mellow ‘Alive Again’ is perhaps an even better song that almost floats by like smoke on the breeze, cool and understated, Polimeno has a lot to say with these scant arrangements. On an album supplemented by a few instrumentals, both the drifting ‘Kokopo’ and the enchanting ‘Gioconda Shuffle’ work well amidst the rest of the work, where perhaps only ‘Remember the Days’ and it’s slightly forced poppier lilt fails to please.

Some of our favourites have to be the first three here, the simple and tender 'Stop Your Love' and the bluesy fim-score-like instrumental that closes 'I Want You' and if you like what you hear you’ll love the rest of what is a rather fine album that you should enjoy late at night with a bottle and a good friend. A young artist to watch closely.

If you want to hear some great guitar that’s not all about shred but about space and tone, this is one for you. It’s an album that will ensnare you before you know it.
