ACOUSTIC MAYHEM

No I’ve never heard of New Killer Shoes, so to review an acoustic album first up is an odd place to start not knowing how far removed this is from their usual sound.

Based on a background of synth sounds (hey hold on I thought this was acoustic) there’s a slightly alternative feel to the vocal; and musically there’s all kinds in the mix. To call them Rock I’m sure wouldn’t upset anyone, but they’re rock in the way that The Chillis or bands like Arctic Monkeys are rock, with a bit of Ska thrown in. I have no idea where the name came from though…

What we have here is an album containing some new material and some ‘Unplugged’ versions of tracks from their debut album ‘I Ain’t Even Lying’. It’s good. I like it, I can’t imagine the album being better as this sounds great as it is. Standouts for us are the funky groove of ‘Snakecharmer’; the Ska of ‘Hypocrite’ and the earthiness of ‘Ain’t Got a Chick’. There may be a slight misogynistic slant to some of the lyrics that some might find a little off, but it’s all part of the package and if the real world scares you what are you doing listening to rock music?

If you want a bit of something different, with some highly amusing lyrics (‘Snakecharmer’ for example) check out some New Killer Shoes.
