MYTHERY

THE AWAKENING OF THE BEAST

2013

Danish Symphonic/Progressive metal outfit Mythery is a real motley crew of musicians of different backgrounds that has managed to create something that captures the essential  ambivalence of Indie Rock  and meld it to a symponic core. Yes it is a little dirfferent but somehow it works.

Add to that a violin and some great keys and a female vocal and ‘Beast’ is a compelling listen. Songs like ‘Another Universe’ and ‘Epoch of Destruction’ that open this release remind us of Kamelot meets Nightwish, but that’s a rather large generalisation that doesn’t touch on the rich complexity on offer here.

The core of the album though is the five part ‘Awakening of the Beast’ starting with delicate strings, and easing in that violin there are obvious comparisons with Prog heavyweights Dream Theater, in essence its quite pastoral and very soothing before the real crunch comes with ‘Part II’. All in all it’s a wonderful piece of work that rides a rollercoaster of sound and emotion, combining jazz tendencies with Metal,  lush orchestration and that fine thread of impassioned violin that seems to tie it all together.

Stunningly different and surprisingly compelling.
