YOUTHFUL ENTHUSIASM

Mystery is a young band and at times that youthful enthusiasm takes them places that more seasoned bands wouldn’t think of going, it’s their biggest draw but also their biggest flaw in that sometimes the optimism and bullishness of youth produces something stunning, or unexpected at other times what it produces is wholly unremarkable.

Putting aside my pet hate – opening tracks that are really just a few seconds of intro music as ‘2013 A New Dawn’ is ‘Raise Your Fist’ makes a statement just by kicking off with a cowbell – it’s one of those songs that rests on a simple riff with some generic ‘defiant’ lyrics but its strangely that which is part of the attraction – the simplicity and the spirit.

‘Freedom’ that follows however is just a generic rocker you’ve heard a million times before and offers nothing. ‘Nonstop to Nowhere’ is worse than that and really shows up a number of flaws but especially the vocals. After two real stinkers however the best song on the album raises its head and if anything points the way ahead ‘Test of Time’ does – it’s nothing you haven’t heard before but that proto-Metal works best of all here.

Perhaps the biggest let down though is that there are only seven originals here (Let’s ignore that opening minute) – and it just isn’t enough (though at the end you might think it’s more than enough)… The covers are interesting – the Dio standard ‘Stand Up and Shout’ – it takes a brave band to cover such a classic and Mystery butcher it completely, though their cover of Men At Work’s ‘Land Downunder’ is the opposite – a horrible song Mettalized nicely – an inspired choice even if it does rely entirely on familiarity with the original.

I’d rather kids listen to this than all that ‘Idol’ nonsense, but improvement is needed.  Still with youth on their side who knows where the road leads.
