BIG RIFFS & BIG HOOKS - LIVE

After an EP ‘Fresh Cut’s comes an album ‘Live Cuts’ from Ireland’s Mockingbird. Odd as it may seem to put out a live album before a full-length it actually makes sense these days to get the name out there presumably prior to releasing that long-player.

This is actually really enjoyable, great blues-based traditional rock and roll that seems like it was forged around the turn of the eighties. The guitars have a great retro sound to them, which drive the songs rather than sit back in the mix. The songs themselves stand up well, melodic, tough, energetic, with huge riffs and even bigger hooks. The best thing though is that it’s all so delightfully unadorned. Mockingbird in releasing this live album have given the songs a chance to breathe, so who knows where they will go in the studio. Hopefully it will be in creating a clean sound like classic Lizzy or NWOBHM.

Of the tracks here we particularly love ‘Steal Your Heart Away’ and ‘Crossfire’. This is great straight ahead rock and roll for those that don’t like anything too fancy, and it sounds so refreshing for it. Can’t wait to see what they get up to in the studio!
