MELODIC METAL MESSAGE

Some say never mix Politics and Religion and I agree wholeheartedly but Metal and Religion? Why not? My only question like with all music is – is it any good? Well that’s what ‘Metal For Jesus’ hopefully is here to answer for us?

Initially I’m a little confused as really this album is not really a look at the scene but rather pretty much the work of one man – singer, songwriter, and producer Christian Liljegren. So the 17 songs here by bands like Divinefire, Audiovision, Modest Attraction, Golden Resurrection, and Narnia all bear his stamp.  Each band is pretty much the same too, perhaps understandably, ranging from Melodic to Power metal, heavy on melody and of course lyrically casting their eyes upwards.

Most of the songs here are by Golden Resurrection and Divinefire and pretty decent from a musical point of view if not startling original, lyrically it’s all about loving God through Jesus and that’s…. pretty much about it, not particularly radical, just simple and  uncontroversial.

And this I guess is the dilemma for Christian Metal or any kind of Religious music that takes a secular form of music as its vessel – what is the point except preaching to the converted? I think every one of every race, creed, colour and religion would agree that music is, or should be, a force for creativity and good by and large, and so surely ‘Metal with a message’ is either designed to cater to an existing audience – i.e. Metalheads and Christians both, or be of sufficient quality to entice ‘non-believers’ to the fold.

Looking at this entirely from a music reviewer’s point of view this is great music for believers.
