KILLER BEE

EVOLUTIONARY CHILDREN

2013

THE NEW BUZZ ON THE STREET

You almost think that opening track of Killer Bee’s new album: ‘Children of the Evolution’ (not a warped T-Rex cover) is being played at the wrong speed… It’s big, epic and reaching but just sounds, well to be honest, like it could kick up a gear or two.

Knowing nothing at all about a band can often be a godsend as it leaves you only the music with no preconceptions; so the fact that this is the second album back after a fifteen year break  really means nothing compared to the smiles that break across your face once you get into this one.

This is good solid, old fashioned Hard Rock the way they used to make it, and whilst I may have been a little harsh about the opener (it does grow on you) the album overall is just what the doctor ordered. This sounds like a band having fun and both the compositions here and the musicianship is solid.

There’s also variety: from the low-down slow blues of “All the Things You Say” which just resonates, to the rocking “Ride On” and “Scream It” and the blues groove of “Gimme A Taste”. It’s where they take it down though, where they work best – “Dust of an Angel” rises and falls on beautiful piano and guitar and there’s just something about the insistent “Maybe Baby”.  Our favourite though of the slower numbers (and there are a few) is closer “If We Die Tomorrow”.

Overall a great album, we’d love to see these guys play this live.
