MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

Here’s an interesting release. I love it when you find a band that isn’t content to take the standard clichés as subject matter. The only hard thing of course is getting it to work without sounding either weird or preachy! INTO CENTURY mange to find that balance and what we get is a fine album that opens up both your eyes and ears!

Creating a huge groove is central to the ‘Into Century’ sound, it underpins much of the music here, and the sweeping melodies, offset with some more aggressive vocals, gives them a very contemporary and very modern sound. So armed with Metal riffs and an attitude like the biggest US post-grunge bands of the last decade they stride into a marketplace where everyone needs a point of difference. For ‘Into Century’ it is the rather enjoyable and thoughtful lyrics.

Like so many bands who sound this way though sometimes it can all seem like so many suits cut from exactly the same cloth. Into Century are good, and while ‘Nobody’s Slave’ and ‘Junkie’ for example are thoroughly good songs, its hard to pick other real standouts a case in point is ‘Open Up Your Gates’ which is a nice groove and a nice enough song just not one that raises its head above what you have already heard from a hundred other bands.

What does set this release aside from the also rans though is what it promises. These guys are great musicians and there’s some wonderful guitar on here, the songs are also well-constructed, lyrically beguiling and consistent. With a sound like ‘Into Century’s’ though, the hard part is how to stand out from a very large crowd. This isn’t that far away from doing so.
