THE PRISONERS DILEMMA

2013

LIGHT AND SHADE

At first listen the beautiful strident soundscapes of ‘I The Writer’ seem at odds with both the lush ‘clean’ vocals and equally at odds with the harsh ‘dirty’ growls that rise from the speakers. But to leave it at that first impression would wholly miss the point. Metalcore to the core there’s no mistaking there is something different and a little exciting about these guys in a genre that is crying out for originality that doesn’t just mean dumping in some synth samples.

Citing bands such as diverse as Memphis May Fire and August Burns Red, to Killswitch Engage and Linkin Park there’s something there that bears repeat listens and even then you still won’t be able to put a finger on it – you’ll just know that this is a band you must see to make sure they can recreate this live.

Hailing from London the band clearly does things their own way, breaking the usual path of so many genre-peers. Songs like ‘Falling to Pieces’ preceded by the atmospheric ‘Forever’ is a great place to start as it captures the essence of the whole. But it’s on tracks like the frantic ‘To Be a Man’ where melody and menace are perfectly balanced that they excel.

Whether the album is named after Richard Power’s compelling novel is anyone’s guess! Big things may well lay in store for them.
