SKIES ARE FALLING

2013

A STING IN THE TAIL

Now Metal with a Punk attitude isn’t anything new: you might even say that is the basis of Motorhead’s sound and listening to Hornet’s first fan-financed long-player ‘Skies are Falling’ it’s a good enough description of a band that seems part AC/DC and part Punk sneer.

This is an album which is just good and dirty Rock and Roll and thankfully one that never lets up its pace until the very end;  which always gets a big thumbs up from me.  Quite frankly it’s not what I expected from a band hailing from the UK seaside town of Hastings, but then why the hell not!

The opening track really sets it all up – ‘Skies are Falling’ is really all you need to know about Hornet, there’s a Dave Mustaine-like sneer to the vocals and an Airborne-like thrust to the music.  But it’s not all the same, even if it is relentless, as there are several other sides to Hornet; from the more aggressive thrashier ‘Second Hand Smoke’ (maybe the best here) to the straighter edged rock of ‘State of Emergency’.

If you want a bit of humour then ‘Sweet Lips’ will appeal; if you want a good old fashioned pummeling then let ‘Down to the Bone’ go to work on your ear drums; and if you want the wild card then closing track ‘Storm the Gates’ is just that - it sounds like the same band a few years down the track.

I’ve also got a soft spot I must admit for ‘Down to the Bone’ which is one of those songs that sounds like it might have been around for a while as it seems to have that essence that is a major ingredient in Hornet’s sound without being as ‘refined’ as some of the other tracks.

If this is the sound of the UK underground Rock is in good hands. This is a great album, probably up there with anything I’ve heard this year, certainly by a new band. If you like it hard any heavy and aren’t afraid of getting your hands dirty with a little Trash and Punk then Hornet is a band you should be checking out. I’ll bet they kick some ass live too.
