THE RETURN OF LOVE METAL...

HIM and their Love Metal has always been something I’ve enjoyed at a distance, a casual fan more likely to spin a hits collection than the latest platter, but nevertheless always a band I’ve enjoyed. 2010’s last outing ‘Screamworks’ though, had been a little disappointing.

This album is one soars from the very start: ‘All Lips Go Blue’ the dynamic opening track (after an interlude) leads the way through to the understated melody of ‘Love Without Tears’ past the crunching pop of guitar driven ‘I Will be the end of You’ and  throughout the full 13 tracks (excluding bonus tracks on some versions taking it to 20).

After a break of almost three years Ville seems rejuvenated; creating an album that takes in the light and shade, power and passion, metal and pop and some soaring melodies along the way to creating a largely beautifully balanced opus which will please fans and new listeners alike.

It’s an album that has a lot to recommend it and is a welcome return from the band. Part of the marvel is that at 13 songs long it is so consistent. The standouts for us though are: ‘All Lips Go Blue’; the deeply melodic ‘Into the Night’ (which might be a little light for some); ‘No Love’ which could be the best track here and ‘W.L.S.T.D.’ both of which are close to the best of HIM.

This is a great return, and even the instrumentals tracks that pepper the release add to it rather than detract.
