LONG FORGOTTEN OCEANS

Gold Coast’s Helm is a five piece progressive, post-rock/metal band with something to say. On’ III’ (oddly enough these days it is actually their third album) they manage to cast a long shadow over a lot of ground. Reading their rather compact bio I loved the line “If predictability & quick access to exactly what you want to hear is your thing, then this is not the band for you.” I almost put the CD back in the sleeve after reading that last bit, not even I know what I want to hear most of the time!

I do take their point though, this isn’t the easiest of listens to someone with an appetite for immediacy and, shall we say, big choruses. What it is though is a collection of songs that at times challenges you at others intrigues you and at times equally infuriates and overwhelms. The band themselves say that this album was the “the heaviest and most experimental release of their juvenile career”. It therefore bodes well.

If you want to jump in with both feet be our guest but watch out for the undertow. If you want to test the water first then a good place to start is with maybe the weighty ‘Iron Wall’ that kicks off the album (Yes first listed track ‘Panthalassa’ is a brief musical preamble). The track combines everything there is to like about the band – melody, power and dark emotion. Along with ‘Albatross’ which is maybe even a greater distillation of their essence, and ‘The Taxidermist’ there’s enough here to make you realise Helm matters.

Oh and by the way the album’s subtitle and opening track ‘Panthalassa’ was a big ancient sea: and I thought studying geology would do me no good!
