DD RETURN TO FORM

Mark our Editor always tells me that Devil Driver is the second worst band he’s ever seen live (in fairness that was many years ago), well maybe he should give them another chance based on what’s on offer here on ‘Winter Kills’.

Last time round ‘The Beast’ took us into heavier territory, this time round Devil Driver seem intent on returning to the sound of their earlier releases with far more emphasis on melody. I don’t know about you but to me that’s certainly a step back in the right direction.

First single ‘Ruthless’ certainly isn’t the best here; so if that turned you on there’s far more inside. Unusually this is also an album that starts off OK and gets better as it goes. Our favourites are the memorable ‘The Appetite’ which is really the first track here that really hits home half way through the album; ‘Ruthless’ which just rocks and pretty much everything from ‘Gutted; to closing track ‘Sail’ (a cover of a song by Indie band ‘Awolnation’).

It may not rate as highly as Devil Driver’s previous high watermark ‘Pray For Villains’ but it certainly has moments when you think it might just be close. Melodic Death Metal for the converted and the curious. Of its genre it’s probably one of the best releases so far this year.
