CD CULT OF LUNA VERTIKAL II REVIEW

CULT OF LUNA

VERTIKAL II

2013

ESSENTIAL EKSTENTION...

We only saw Cult of Luna release ‘Vertikal’ earlier in the year and yet close on its heels comes
‘Vertikal II’ – it’s best to think of this as a sister release or maybe even what some bands might put on a bonus disc, being as it is the material that didn’t make the album. Still fans I’m sure will just be happy that there’s a new EP along so soon.

If you love your Metal sludgy this EP of offcuts – three new songs and a remix of ‘Vicarious Redemption’ (from ‘Vertikal’) this EP will be a welcome addition to your collection as far than being throwaway it’s almost 40 minutes of Sweden’s finest sludge.

I can’t imagine too many out there who love the genre would be unfamiliar with the band, but if you are imagine Neurosis – as the three new tracks here are certainly of that type. Damn good they are too.  ‘Oro’, ‘Light Chaser’ and ‘Shun the Mask’ may all follow a familiar pattern, but Cult of Luna have perfected the art form of slow build, slow burn groove.  The revelation here is the remix of  ‘Vicarious Redemption’ which beats the original hands down in my opinion.

Solid sludge to pour in your ears…
