MODERN PROGRESSIVE ROCK

Benesser may well not be a name on everyone’s lips and to be honest I’m only guessing at pronouncing it myself. I always get worried by titles like ‘The Start of Something New’ as it always seems to come with added ‘Prog’ and all the odd time signatures that usually signifies.

What Benesser is, is a band that manages to combine rather lush elements of modern progressive rock a la Coldplay, Muse and even modern Rush with a hard rock core that brings a little more energy to what could be a rather self-indulgent sound (i.e. the worst elements of Coldplay).

You know what? At moments it works but at others it strikes a curious position where you are unsure whether this is homage or from the heart. The fact that this band has been around almost 15 years before releasing this – their debut, also offers a number of questions: I guess most intriguingly did they sound like Muse before Muse existed?.

What is most impressive is the size of the sound that this three-piece manages to conjure.  If you are curious start by checking out what is my stand-out ‘Babyface’. The sound may not exactly my cup of tea, but I am appreciative of the quality here enough to recommend it to any Muse fans out there who might bemoan the days when guitar was still very much at the fore.

You’ll either be very impressed or completely non-plussed by these imaginative Swedes. Dynamic and beautiful or derivative? You choose.
