SLICK BLACK SYMPHONIC GOTH

This is a nice concept, a Gothic Horror Rock band whose singer Avelina De Moray (We’re guessing that’s not her birth name) does a nice line in tattoos, photography and art and combines the two in a limited edition book that looks from what we’ve seen pretty damn nice. Here though all we’re interested in is the music.

‘Sinfully Yours’ has the horror film soundtrack intro before the drums and guitar kick in. It reminds you of something between symphonic Metal and Evanescence. It’s certainly not dark and brooding in the way Goth used to be when it took its cue from Nosferatu, this is more of a clean ‘True Blood’ style take on things. It’s a great song and if that’s the kind of darkness you inhabit you will love this release.

‘Desire’ strikes a very similar pose, chunky riffs, nice keys, clean vocals and solid backline. It’s really the story of an album that holds few surprises once you’ve heard the first track, except perhaps how consistent it is.  Some of our favourite moments are the gentle cascading ‘I Drown’; the interesting Gothic drama of ‘Carfax Abbey’ (Carfax was of course the house that Dracula bought in the book by Stoker, ‘Abbey’ was  added later by filmmakers) and the piano led ‘Beautifully Decayed’ that closes is another fine song.

At eight tracks these days you might be wanting a little more but to be honest I’ve never heard better music from this mould being made in Australia.
