The Rockpit Best Music of 2013

2013 was a great year for music - our 'best of' lists have been totally revamped this year - we hope you enjoy the music...

The best albums of 2013 voted for by all contributors are...

2013 was a tough year to compile an overall list with all contributors putting in some very different lists... In the end any album in the Top 10 could have made it to number one and there were so many great releases just outside the full list by a point or two I decided to publish my full Top 50 too! - Mark

Andrew's Top Albums of 2013...

2013 has been a decent year for rock and metal music, mostly in the underground scene but the mainstream did manage to pull a few gems out of the bag for us. So here is my top 10 list of what I think are the best albums of the year.

1.

Death Angel: The Dream Calls For Blood - So finally we have the album of the year and I had to pick the new one from Bay Area thrashers Death Angel. Not only is this the best album the band have ever put out in their long and eventful career but certaintly one of the best pure thrash albums to come out in the last 20 years. From the title track to Ultra-Violence inspired "Empty", this album has it all. Best album of 2013 without a doubt!

2.

Annihilator: Feast - Almost picked this one as album of the year, even just for the bonus disc which features re-recordings of the band's classic songs from previous albums which sound absolutely amazing. The original material however including "Deadlock" and "Demon Code" are some of the best songs Jeff Waters has ever written, this is a fantastic album that needs to be checked out.

3.

Sepultura: The Mediator Between Head and Hands Must Be The Heart - The Brazilian heavy hitters came back in 2013 with one of their most heaviest albums to date. Whatever you might think of their later albums and their constant line-up changes, this one is on it's own merit a brutal album that stands on it's own. From "The Vatican" to "Obsessed" featuring Dave Lombardo on drums, this album does not let up.

4.

Toxic Holocaust: Chemistry Of Consciousness - Joel Grind and his band of punk thrashers put out a solid album in 2013 with this riff-o-rama of chugging riffs and hooks that stick in your head for weeks on end. Opener "Awaken The Serpent" and trippy rocker "Acid Fuzz" are definite highlights.

5.

Violator: Scenarios Of Brutality - This Brazilian thrash metal band gives fellow Brazilians Sepultura a run for their money in the speed and energy department. Putting out one of their thrashiest albums to date, any fans of speed and thrash metal must give this one a spin. Thrash metal doesn't get much better than this.!

6.

Earthless: From The Ages - The psychedelic rockers put out their best album to date, giving fans another mind altering trip through space and time. All instrumental and all rocking hard with enough mellowness to question who you are. Check out the title track clocking in at over 30 minutes and then tell me you didn't experience something out of this world!

7.

Carcass: Surgical Steel - Yet another comeback band, this time in the more extreme metal genre. A lot of fans were looking forward to this album from the pioneers of crust punk and extreme metal and again, this one exceeded expectations. Do yourself a favor and throw this in the music box, it won't disappoint!

8.

Vista Chino: Peace - The band that is otherwise known as Kyuss came back and brought us this gem, a stoner rock delight that harks back to the Kyuss era but also going forward with a new sense of riffage and future. John Garcia sounds as good as ever and if you close your eyes at certain times, you may trip back to those days of old.

9.

Kill Devil Hill: Revolution Rise - This was a last minute addition after the album had just come out and it's good to see yet again another band that Rex Brown has successfully been a part of. The laid back southern groove with a touch of 70's style was always going to be a winner. Watch this band explode in the next few years.

10.

Black Sabbath: 13 - It actually surprised me a lot when I first heard this album how good it really was. There were huge expectations of course but I think they were at the very least fullfilled to the brim. It was good to see the band retain the old school Sabbath style as that is the very definition of Black Sabbath's signature sound.

The best Live Shows of 2013 according to Mark...

perhaps the hardest list of all this year with so many great shows in Australia and in Europe I was lucky enough to catch. I've left out the Festivals as such as we all know how great our local Festivals are - this year we saw 10 YEARS of BLUES AND ROOTS, METALLICA at SOUNDWAVE 2013 AND THE CHILLI PEPPERS at BIG DAY OUT , then overseas we took in our favourite US Festival ROCKLAHOMA and the new HI-ROCK Festival in GERMANY... Rock is alive and kicking as we go into 2014 - get out and support your local live music scene...
