UGLY KID JOE

STAIRWAY TO HELL

2012

Some, as I said saw Ugly Kid Joe as a bunch of rich boys playing at rock and roll, elevated to a statue beyond their natural place on the pecking order thanks to an infectiously catchy piece of pop that was ‘Everything About You’ and kept artificially high with a choice cover of ‘Cats in the Cradle’. I actually didn’t mid them at all.

2012 sees their return and the only questions for me are do they have anything new to say and is there another ‘hit’ lurking here anywhere?

6 tracks used to be called a mini-album back in the day and in truth it’s a pretty decent slab of ‘Joe’ to give an opinion.

This is good stuff, still that Sabbathy metal riffage that these days has you looking at names like Wolfmother before remembering that these guys were there first!

Overall the sound is nothing dramatically new for UKJ, which if you’re a fan is great news: opener ‘Devil’s paradise’ is a great track with Crane coming across like Bon Scott meets Ozzy. It makes you want to go out and grab that copy of ‘Menace to Sobriety’ again!

The rest of the EP is pretty good too. ‘You Make Me Sick’ is the closet we get to ‘Everything…’ There are also a couple of great tracks in the acoustic Country-styled ballad: ‘Another Beer’ and also ‘I’m Alright’ which delivers straight up hard rock the way these guys used to do it. ‘No One Survives’ is pretty good too.

Perhaps the only real disappointment is the collaboration with members of Fishbone (which I was excited about until I heard it).  Not that bad a song, funky as you would expect, but just not very special.

I for one am looking forward to hearing more on the basis of this EP.
