This is good…

The Cult may have found that perfect balance. Whatever the state of the relationship between key men Astbury and Duffy it’s working musically, and working well.  From the start of the riff to ‘Honey From a Knife’ you know that they’ve found that sweet spot with a song that will find its way effortlessly into their setlist.

First single ‘For the Animals’ is another winner with mad piano and driving guitar and drums providing the canvas for Astbury’s urgent vocal plea. While there’s not much to merely pass you by on the disc there are certainly another couple of standouts in the very Cult-like ‘A Pale Horse’ which almost manages the channel the sound the band had all those years ago pre-‘Love’ and pre-‘Electric; and update it. And of course ‘The Wolf’ which is the natural successor to that biggest of Cult tunes ‘She Sells Sanctuary’.

Others to watch out for include the more experimental slower number ‘Wilderness Now’ and the bonus disc’s ‘Every Man and Woman is a Star’. Now quite why there is a bonus disc with four tracks I’m not sure as all 14 tracks here sound cohesive and  worthy of a place on the album.

Looking forward to seeing this live…
