STICKY BOYS

THIS IS ROCK 'N ROLL

LISTENABLE RECORDS

RELEASED APRIL 2012

From the opening chords you think AC/DC… then when you realise that the opening number ‘This is Rock ‘n Roll’ is just those chords repeated, unadorned, you wonder if this is a manifesto of intent or just a lazy way of getting an extra track on the CD?

‘Rock n’ Roll Nation’ that immediately follows really does underline the AC/DC connection it’s a driving rocker that leaves a punky taste in the mouth. It’s played well, sounds good, but as you will all no doubt know it’s been done so many times before. So what’s the twist? Are they as good as bands like Airbourne?

Well the twist in this case is that they hail from France and the answer to the other question is they’re pretty much on par.

So if you like it stripped back all I can say is that songs like ‘Girls in the City’ (our current favourite) and ‘Great Big Dynamite’ deliver the goods. ‘The World Don’t Go Round’ is another song that stands out, giving off a heady Hells Bells vibe…

And if you want variety – it may be a little hard to find but I guess ‘Fat Boy Charlie’ gives us a little variety in that it seems to lean more towards Motorhead than AC/DC.

Of the highlights though it’s probably closer ‘The Way to Rock ‘n Roll’ that wins the day.

So here we are left with an album that in truth is pretty competent, and a band which you could imagine would be great fun live, but still an album where nothing will really drive you wild with excitement and therein lays the dilemma.

Good time Rock and Roll, simple stuff, made to bang your head to. One thing’s for sure France’s Sticky Boys make a helluva racket for a three piece…
