HURT

THE CRUX

2012

The best thing about writing reviews is that you get to speak your mind and put across your opinion. The best thing about The Rockpit is that I don’t have to worry about upsetting bands with what I really think about them, though of course I always look for the positives.

Having said that – this is great – Alternative Rock that actually ROCKS!

Coming across initially like a modern Mother Love Bone with more Pearl Jam, less Glam (does that make sense to anyone but me?) Hurt manages to make something that even the traditionalists will take something away from.  Quite simply they understand dynamics in the way that bands like Live understood them and when you combine that with some great songs how can you fail?

‘So When ‘ which opens proceedings tells the story, hard hotting thoughtful rock with just enough air and light, and post-Nirvana vocal to gain the ‘alternative rock’ tag. Remember that when Pearl Jam arrived on the scene they were labelled as 70’s throwbacks.

‘Eden’ is a monster built of power and longing, and they sell it so effectively. Lyrically we’re on interesting ground and this song is the one that grabs me most of all. It’s wonderful.

Elsewhere I’m particularly impressed by the likes of ‘Adonai’ with its almost Mission UK flavour (anyone remember those guys?) and closer ‘The Seer’, all up it’s a fine album.

These are big sounds, but they manage to let the songs breathe. They seem to understand dynamics and space far better than most too.

Where are these f*****s from – I have to see them live!  Missouri… s**t!

Go and see them for me will you while I track down their back catalogue…
