GOTTHARD

FIREBIRTH

2012

Gotthard is back with new singer Nic Maeder in tow and it is of course bittersweet for most Gottahrd fans after the tragic death of previous frontman Steve Lee. The good news for fans is that this is a great return..

Let’s face it no one is going to replace Steve Lee and we’ll leave it at that.

Now with Nic Maeder (check out our recent INTERVIEW HERE) behind the microphone what we find is that the band hasn’t missed a beat and produced a comeback full of quality and thankfully trademark Gotthard songs.

Now Nic may not be Steve Lee but there is something in his voice that recalls the great man. And on ‘Firebirth’ the band adds to the great Gotthard tradition.

Opening with the single ‘Starlight’ (not my favourite track here by a long way) is a it of a strange choice when there is so much more on offer here. It’s not a bad song, but certainly not one that is going to kick your butt either.

Where we find the band (and Nic) at their best is on tracks like the mid-tempo ‘Remember It’s Me’; the acoustic highpoint ‘Tell Me’ and out and out rockers ‘Right On’ and ‘Take It all Back’.

While this may not rank up their with their very peak it’s a very solid album by a band that has been together for such a long time: I’m so glad they seem to have made it through the tragedy as strong as ever and wish Nic all the best for the upcoming tour of South America and Europe.
