FIREBIRD

HOT WINGS

RELEASED 2012

From the opening drum beats of ‘Carousel’ you know you are in for a big fat bluesy treat, hitting you like Cream meets Hendrix, it’s a nice way to set out the stall

And from here on in we get more of the blues but of different flavours: from the real retro, harp-riddled ‘Misty Morning’ through the wailing slide of ‘Play the Fool’ you can feel the love these guys have of the music and appreciate the skill of their craft. Best thing about Firebird though is that they have the chops and the songs to be more than just contenders.

With nothing to complain about some real gems stand out for me: ‘Horse Drawn Man’ hypnotises; ‘Bow Bells’ slide works well and ‘Flying Blind’ sounds like good Black Crowes.

For something slower ‘I Wish You Well’ (no not the old Whitesnake number) is memorable as is instrumental closer – ‘Needle in the Groove’

If you have blues in your soul you need some Firebird…
