The Hangers On
The Hangers On II

By Todd Jolicouer

The Hangers On, a group of young guys from Lansing (Swartz Creek), Michigan - Eric Fridline (vocals/bass), dueling guitar brothers Matt and Nick, and drummer Zach Stowe - are poised to take it to the next level. Compared to their debut released a couple years ago, this sophomore effort really shines. They took raw talent as exhibited on their debut and then honed their craft and grew up in the bars and clubs around Michigan. The music is tighter and the lyrics are more applicable to real life of college age rockers. Essentially, this disc shows how they have improved, but also lends itself to point out these guys are in it to win it.

As witnessed by opener ‘Down in Fame’ and the next tune, ‘Ball And Chain’, these guys are for real. These are two great guitar driven tunes with vocals that don’t sound like every other band out there. Most of these songs keep the tempo up (great for working out, if you are going for an elevated heart rate) and leave no room for sappy ballads. This ain’t your momma’s rock, but you don’t have to rule out playing it when she is around either.

Another great track here is ‘Back To Hell’ which really lends itself to throwing the horns in the name of heavy metal. I have trouble finding songs I don’t like. Closer ‘When The Hammer Falls Down’ is another example of how great these songs are. These guys pepper you with great guitar hooks, strong songs writing, and solid playing. Now they just need that big break that other bands with equal or less talent have been given. If you are in the area, I suggest checking them out, as you can usually find them playing out in Lansing or Flint. Pick this one up. If you dig garage rock with a harder edge, you won’t be disappointed.
