VICE GRIP PUSSIES - surely St Kilda's sleaziest punk n' rollers - ascend the stage after what was apparantly a legend-making set of stoner metal from WIZARDS SLEEVE. I'm bummed to have missed it, but very happy to have caught the off-the-wall punk metal of The Pussies.
Like some mad mashup of The New York Dolls, Hanoi Rocks and The Hard-Ons, they've come all the way from Melbourne to kick Perth's album in support of their latest single, and they succeed admirably. Rough, raw and sleazy, VGP nailed their set with all the devil-may-care attitude of thehairiest and scruffiest band of rock pirates who ever sailed the seven seas.
BLAZIN' ENTRAILS are next to tear the Rocket Room a new one with their Stray Cats meets Motorhead dynamite factory madness. The Entrails always impress and tonight is no exception, barraging and blitzing the punters here tonight with a classy mix of sheer force, melody and style, finishing with the countrybilly-proto-grunge of 'Aint Nothin For You Here'.
Tonight's big dogs were THE CHAINSAW HOOKERS, battle hardened survivors of the punk metal wasteland, growling, chanting, thrashing their way through a set which sees the mosh pit turn into a maelstrom. Hitting up tracks from their "First Blood" EP and their new 7 inch vinyl single 'Texas Is Hell', there's no doubt that these guys are going from strength to strength as they successfully blend the punk brutality of Motorhead with the metal assault of Black Flag and The Ramones.
A great night of full force rockin'!
