BITCH QUEENS
Female Shotgun
Lux Noise, 2010

Shane Pinnegar

The Bitch Queens are a noisy bunch of social misfits hailing from Basel, Switzerland who play punkish heavy rock with a Swedish bent, full of melodies that will sink their hooks deep under your skin – think The Backyard Babies, think Hellacopters, think dirty sleaze riffs, sneering Crystal Pistol flavoured vocals and a touch of The Damned and The Dead Boys.

There’s nothing particularly ground breaking about “Female Shotgun”, but what the Bitch Queens do, they do better than most. ‘Hooked On Gasoline’ and ‘Back Home (Fuck Home)’ are smoking hot slabs of “fuck you”-dom. The title track and ‘First Rule’ are psychotic slabs of super-sleaze – “First rule – IS – we’re better than you” - yeah baby, I like your form!

‘Don’t Give Me Hell’ is a Stooges/QOTSA groover with a great melody line, and an almost New Wave-ey guitar breakdown in the middle. Glorious stuff and a fitting album closer.

Bitch Queens have the attitude and the talent to go far – I’d certainly be up the front if they ever play in my town.
