Hi, for starters wonderful weblog, but is any person else seeing the sidebar all messed up making use of firefox edition two? It truly is pushed about to your centre for me. =-=
Matt Williams (Black Steel, Humungous D) and Rockin’ Rick Lovett (Rockstar) have been mainstays of the Western Australian metal and hard rock scene for many years, but it’s been a full fifteen years since they recorded Project X’s debut album “The Mirror” and this time around the result is one of the best traditional metal albums of 2011. Taste Of Rock & Roll
2011
By Shane Pinnegar
From the moment TOR&R stomps it’s leather boot out of the speakers full of teenage sass and pout, hairspray and hangovers, it’s obvious that these four young dudes – L.A. Mangano, Majyk, 9 Volt and Joey – were suckled on the teat of classic rock and glam from the glory days before these boys were even born. READ MORE
ORIANTHE
FiRe EP
2011
By Shane Pinnegar
Boasting a sultry, smokey voice vaguely reminiscent of Allanah Myles, and some commercial blues licks, Alice Cooper’s current guitarist dishes up a pretty good 5 song EP, with ‘Heaven In This Hell’ and the title track standing head and shoulders above the rest, which are let down by an overly sappy approach. Promising, but not essential.

I know – it’s Nickelback. But I have to replay with, “It’s Nickelback!!!” These guys catch so much flack because people say they are too poppy and everything sounds the same. By Todd Jolicoeur
I am not normally one to rate or review a greatest hits package. Most times, I feel it is a way for a band or label to cash in on a back catalog when no new material can or will be created. Sometimes a band will release one if they are trying to get out of a contract. So why review this? READ MORE

Any Man In America
2011
By Todd Jolicoeur
What an emotional hour this is… very draining, yet rewarding. Man, this disc made me a fan for ever. Add to that the conversation I had with Justin about this disc and all that led up to it, and this was probably the most reflective piece I have, or most likely will, ever listen to. READ MORE
WITHIN TEMPTATION
The Unforgiving

By Todd Jolicoeur
This disc was quite the turning point for me. It created a GREAT love for the more symphonic sound, while anchoring my love for melodic songs that had music filled with passion and lyrics that were though provoking and retrospective. RECKLESS LOVE

When I experience a special musical moment, I get a chill. It doesn’t happen often, but it’s undeniable when it does. Well this is a nice surprise on a wet and windy November morning. Vice Grip Pussies
Mein Control (Single)
2011, self released
By Shane Pinnegar
The Vice Grip Pussies are a low-fi punkish hard rock tribe of ne’er-do-wells with a cheeky sense of humour & a large record collection. Where ‘Mein Control’ is a nascent headbanger of a tune, ‘Jesco White ’ is more Detroit fuzz garage than anything out of late Seventies London, apart from the Clash-homage reggae breakdown in it’s guts. A good teaser – let’s hear more.

Definitely one of the albums of the year AND it's on the radio... what is the world coming to?
CHRIS CORNELL

One to own.

LAST APPROACH
FROM ME TO YOU
RELEASED 2011
by Leslie Phillips
This is modern rock with a lot of promise and though I always find EPs hard to review this one seems to tell the story of a band that could really go somewhere. Scorps fans will of course love it, but for anyone else unless you are at a loose end and have cash burning a hole in your pocket it’s not going to change your life hearing a bunch of rerecorded originals and covers. As far as debut EP’s go, “Open Heart” from Imogen Brave is a winner! Part pop, part rock and part alternative, with just a few punkish moments thrown in for good measure. All of the elements come together to create a very solid listening experience, and a sound that is very original. READ MORE

I am no stranger to this band, I first heard of them earlier this year and was surprised that I hadn't heard them before. Red Sea Rising certainly know how to hold my attention. Now releasing their new album "Eye of The Storm" via Interscope/ Universal, these guys are here to stay, ‘cos I can’t imagine they would leave quietly. READ MORE

My Damnation
Released 2011
By Shayne Bishop
Musically “My Damnation” has a lot of potential. It is chock full of groovy riffs and heavy breakdowns, even some very intricate solos, but the vocals are full of growls and screams, and there is virtually not an understandable word among them. READ MORE
MOTLEY CRUE
Greatest Hits - 2011 Australian Tour Edition
Sony
Released 2011

Motley’s latest revamped Greatest Hits features most of the songs you’d expect, though is notably absent for omitting anything from the John Corabi years, or their ‘New Tattoo’ album, and featuring only one tune each from their debut or ‘Generation Swine’. READ MORE
FASTRACK
Steal The Show
Released 2011
By Shane Pinnegar
Once upon a time every self respecting rock band wanted to be AC/DC, with their boogie rhythms, gravel-throated vocals, and searing solos… and then Airbourne came along with their distillation of the Accadacca sound and it seems now there are wave upon wave of bands wanting to be them instead!READ MORE
THE SCARLETS
BOMBSHELL EP
Released 2011
by Mark Diggins
Wow! This is as good an EP as I have heard all year. If you haven't heard the Scarlets yet I suggest you check them out now, because on the basis of this, their second EP, they should be getting bigger soon.
Some of you are going to love this one! Loud uncompramising rolling rock with a monster groove - this seven track EP/Mini album really does the trick if you yearn after something stronger than Cluth or something riffier than Down.
Let me say, if you are a Slash fan and picked up either the deluxe version of his debut solo disc or one of the various international/import editions, you have heard the voice of Koshi Inaba. He sang lead vocal on “Sahara.” This disc sees him once again recording with guitarist and band mate Tak Matsumoto. READ MORE
DEREK SHERINAN
OCEANA
Released 2011

There is no doubt Derek Sherinian is one of the most prolific keyboardists in music today. There is also no doubt that he has tons of friends who are also prolific guitarists in their own right. If you are looking for a great album of jazzed up rock tunes that feature Derek and a few of his friends, you should check out his latest, Oceana, which is scheduled to be released September 5, 2011. KITTIE
I'VE FAILED YOU
Released 2011
by Todd Jolicouer
How do you objectively critique a CD recorded by friends of yours? Most people may find the dilemma, but when those friends are Morgan and Mercedes Lander, Tara McLeod, and Ivy Jenkins, collectively known as Kittie, it is easy. Much like everything else in their long career, they don’t want any favors or “gimmes.” They want to earn it. And earn it they have. READ MORE
POP EVIL
WAR OF ANGLES
Released 2011
by Todd Jolicouer
WOW!!! One listen through this disc isn’t enough. This one has hit a regular rotation position in my collection – and that is no small feat. This sophomore effort from the Muskegon, MI band really kicks ass from opener “Last Man Standing” on through arena rock-style tunes “Boss’s Daughter” and even social commentary on “Black & Blue.” The band is very talented and knows not only where they want to get, but how to get there. SEETHER
HOLDING ONTO STRINGS BETTER LEFT TO FRAY
Released 2011
by Todd Jolicouer
Seether has done it again – another solid release that does not hold back or keep you from knowing exactly who this band is or where they want to go… trust me, they get there. Shaun Morgan has a way of putting songs together that make this band shine, and this disc does that from start to finish. READ MORE
STRAIGHT LINE STITCH
THE NIGHT OF OUR LIVES
Released 2011
by Todd Jolicouer
Straight Line Stitch seems to get quite a bit of attention lately. Unfortunately and fortunately, it isn’t for their musical prowess. Vocalist and front woman seems to garner the attention because of her looks. She is very attractive, but not the reason any band should get press. Much like other bands in the genre of Hardcore, you really need to let the music do the talking. READ MORE
THEORY OF A DEADMAN

Not often a CD drops that is fun front to back, while throwing in a few ditties to make you think a little. That has happened here on the newest release from Theory Of A Deadman. One listen and there is no question how these guys got the opening slot on the Carnival of Madness 2011 tour. The Truth Is… I can’t stop listening to this disc. READ MORE

HOUSE OF LORDS
BIG MONEY
Frontiers Records
Released 2011
by Mark Diggins
House of Lords' last outing 'Cartesian Dreams' was a real treat that was sure to take some beating, so has House of Lords hit another homer?
Here we have the third offering from Baltimore’s Images Of Eden this is a very unique band in that each CD (album, release) is an ongoing story, portraying the journey through life, told in a very spirited / uplifting way. The beginning of each release picks up exactly where the previous have left off with its melodic progressive /hard rock sound. READ MORE

THE QUILL
FULL CIRCLE
Released 2011
by Mark Diggins
A few albums in The Quill still may not be a name you're familiar with but fans of good old fashioned metal should probably check out. Groove based rock with some great hooks: some people say they sound like QOTSA or even Temple of the Dog and there is a hint of that kinda groove. If you are looking for winners 'Dark Star' did it for us. Slower songs like 'River of a Moonchild' open up even more Zeppelinesque possibilities - one to watch...
TOBY HITCHCOCK
MERCURY DOWN
Frontiers Records
Released 2011
by Jo Rockpit
From the voice of Pride Of Lions comes a riff and key heavy slab of melodic rock that will send shivers down the spine of anyone who loves bombastic over the top melodic rock. In truth there's some great songs here and the energy that eminates from this disc is amazing. Stylisticly though if you don't like your melody up to 11 and you have a deep suspicion of keyboards you might want to look the other way...
SCREAMING TREES
LAST WORDS... THE FINAL RECORDINGS
Released 2011
by Mark Diggins
I always had a soft spot for Screaming Trees back in the day they seemed to be one of the few bands tagged with the grunge lable that offered a little more (like more than a couple of decent songs) sadly this is the end and they are not going to get back together any time soon. This is a collection of decent enough tunes dating back to 98-99, it's not essential but still rather nice...
LOVE MIGHT KILL
BRACE FOR IMPACT
Released 2011

HELL OR HIGHWATER
BEGIN AGAIN
Released 2011
by Mark Diggins
To be honest this isn't a bad debut album and Hell or Highwater sounds like they may just be a little more than a side project for Atreyu drummer Brandon Saller who takes vocal duties here. Hard, fast modern rock with a surprising amount of variety from punk pop to country southern fried rock. Wort checking out.
WORK OF ART
IN PROGRESS
Frontiers Records
Released 2011
by Mark Diggins
Classic West Coast AOR for the softest of listens and some of the biggest choruses ever made by man make this a potential soft melodic masterpiece. To be honest if you don't like it soft in the Toto or Nelson vein then this may be too much to take. If you hear 'The Rain' and start getting a little dizzy then the rest of the album will have you heading for a lay down. This is magic but maybe too much sugar for some!
VICTORY
DON'T TALK SCIENCE
Released 2011
by Mark Diggins
Victory has been around since 1984 and I must admit to being a bit of a fan but it's a long time since the last outing and with a new singer in tow things are a little different. This is just good solid old school metal in the Accept mould, and while it's solid it's not dynamite. The straight faced metal cover of the Pointer Sisters 'I'm So Excited' will either make you laugh or cry though... Those Germans - who said they have no sense of humour!?
XORIGIN
STATE OF THE ART
Frontiers Records
Released 2011
by Jo Rockpit
If you are after a nice collection of melodic rock in the Foreigner/Night Ranger mould then this is one for your collection. Good, occasionally great songs, nice guitars and some very nice vocals makes a really good album. 'In the Blink of an Eye' is one of the best ballads I've heard this year.
THE TREATMENT
THIS MIGHT HURT
Released 2011
by Mark Diggins
The Treatment's debut ticks all the right boxes! ‘This Might Hurt’ has 12 fast, frenetic, exciting hard rock songs packed into a small piece of plastic! Musicially we're in the 80's, with a 70's patina. Sonically it's class all the way: Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin meets AC/DC in Bad Company and Mott the Hoople's backyard. One of the best of the year...

This one showed up in the mail and wasn’t quite sure what to expect from a band with a name like Dead Sara. Barry Manilow

I know… what is Barry Manilow doing on The Rockpit? You would be surprised. First, I am a huge fan, and have been for years. The first concert tickets I ever bought from a scalper were for Barry Manilow in 1988. Put aside your preconceived notions that Barry Manilow is easy listening and give me a minute to explain why this disc belongs here and why it has earned 4-1/2 stars. READ MORE

BLACK TIDE
POST MORTEM
Released 2011
by Mark Diggins
Black Tide's debut was one of my favourite albums of that year and to later get to see the band support Trivium when they toured downunder proved they could also do it live. For such a young band that's an almost unheard of amount of potential... So the really big question is, can they back it up?
About this time of year a big meat-on-the-bones Live release is just what the doctor ordered and this one is a real treat from one of the voices of modern day rock. READ MORE

There’s been such a glut of quality Swedish sleaze and glam rock in the past few years that it’s hard to keep up with it all. HAMMERFALL
INFECTED
2011
By Robert Kitay
This album is a bit of a departure from Hammerfall’s previous releases. From the album cover to the topics of the songs (less fantasy and more horror), Infected was not what I expected. That is not to say that this is a bad album because there is a lot to like in this release, but it certainly isn’t my favorite release from Hammerfall and it isn’t where I would recommend you start if you are new to the band. PUSHKING
The World As We Love It
RIOT ENTERTAINMENT
Released 2011
By Shane Pinnegar
I’ll admit that I don’t know who Pushking are, or what they’ve done in the past – but I can tell you one thing: their rolodex reads like a “who’s who” of hard rock and “The World As We love It” is a trainspotter’s delight – Billy F Gibbons, Alice Cooper, Steve Vai, Paul Stanley, Joe Bonamassa, Glenn Hughes, Dan McCafferty – holy hell, that’s just for starters! Zakk Wylde returns with “a collection of unplugged and unreleased tracks from the ORDER OF THE BLACK recording sessions” – and it is exactly what it says on the tin. An acoustic rendition of ‘Overlord’ opens proceedings and it’s perhaps surprising how much MORE Zakk sounds like early Sabbath era Ozzy in this stripped back mode. READ MORE
180 PROOF
THE GUTTER SESSIONS PART 1 EP
SELF RELEASED
2011
By Shane Pinnegar
These scuzzed n’ fuzzed up blues rockers from Melbourne have crawled out of the gutter they call home, wiped off last night’s vomit stains, and headed into the studio to lay down 4 tracks of blistering blues with some heavy nods to punk and metal. ‘Intoxication’ best showcases 180 PROOF’s masterplan, with a sleazy bit of Bon-era AC/DC here, a Pistols sneer there, and a tasty bit of soloing on the side. A solid debut EP that shows promise for the future.
SANDRA DEE
VISIONS OF PAIN
Eonian Records
Released 2011
By Shane Pinnegar
Competant though a little pedestrian US hard rock which teeters on the brink of a grungier and darker sound than the hair metal bands Eonian Records usually unearths, Sandra Dee still have one first firmly in the sleazy sounds of the late eighties and there’s a lot here to like.
ROCK AID ARMENIA
SMOKE ON THE WATER - METROPOLIS SESSIONS
RIOT ENTERTAINMENT
By Shane Pinnegar
21st anniversary reissue of Rock Aid Armenia charity single ‘Smoke On The Water’ sees a stellar lineup (Gillan, Blackmore, Dickinson, May, Gilmour, Iommi, Lifeson, Rodgers & more) lay into the Deep Purple classic. The brand new remix by Wermut & Dee sounds fat and juicy, and with a worthy cause, a good version of the classic song and an interesting bonus DVD this EP is well worth a few of your bucks.
PRIMAL SCREAM
SCREAMADELICA 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition
SONY
for the album, For The Reissue
By Shane Pinnegar. “Screamadelica” was the sound of rock and dance colliding in a gloriously uplifting, MDMA fuelled kaleidoscope of sound and magic. Sounds that had never been heard were suddenly possible, and twenty years later the album sounds as fresh and wonderful as it did upon its release. Comes with a bonus EP with a few remixes and B-sides.
EGYPT CENTRAL
WHITE RABBIT
Released 2011
By Todd Jolicouer
This isn’t their first rodeo, but certainly their first foray into some fame, fortune, and tons of radio airplay. John Falls leads the charge and uses his voice to tell the stories on this disc. He is just as comfortable signing as he is screaming to accent his point. Nope, this isn’t screamo, he simply takes the intensity up a notch at times – this is a good thing. READ MORE

The buzz was all around this young band after the release of the first single, “Bounce” to rock radio. I heard it on Octane and instantly wanted to see these guys succeed. CHAOS DIVINE
THE HUMAN CONNECTION
By Lips McConoghue
It’s fair to say that I am not the biggest fan of Prog rock/metal. So much so that I nearly didn’t review this CD, purely as I felt I didn’t have the understanding of the genre to give it credit that it may deserve. What this Chaos Divine disc proved to me is that I do know when something is good no matter what ‘pigeon hole’ you want to put it in and this CD is VERY GOOD. READ MORE

Nice! A limited edition CD that looks like vinyl & sounds like the music you used to get excited about when vinyl was king. I love half of this EP and it promises a lot but it also makes me wonder what the band is really aiming for? It's frustrating, it's good but not quite there yet, if you want something that rocks but sounds different to the run of the mill check them out.

BARREL HOUSE
SPECIES VAGABOND
Released 2010
by Jo Rockpit
This smells like a damp pub on an otherwise sunny afternoon and sounds like blues and roots along the lines of (but not as good as) The Black Keys. There's slide guitar, Hammond organ and a dab of funk and a measue of Ben Harper. All in all it's not bad at all, if a little light on for the Rockpit. Songs like 'Get on Board' in its laid back glory and 'Let Me In' are well worth a look. We like it!

SISTER
HATED
Released 2011
by Jo Rockpit
The sleaze of early Crue with an injection of pissed-off punk and snarling razor blade, gargle with glass vocals. If that sounds like your sort of thing then Sister may be one for you: a band that don’t know the definition of subtle and place raise-your-fist and yell stomping anthems above everything else. PETER MURPHY
NINTH
Released 2011
by Mark Diggins
I go way back with Peter Murphy - all the way back to Bauhaus. Too be perfectly honest as a solo artist I've enjoyed the ride and Murphy's albums have been consistent over the years. Sure there's early eighties gothic cool, a bit of Bowie thrown in and a smoky cocktail hour film noire chic. I like that, you might not. It's retro, it may even sound a little pretentious, and whilst it may not be as essential a part of the catalogue as some you'd be hard pushed to argue it wasn't still cool.
Jeff Jones
SPACED

You may not know the name Jeff Jones, but really you should. 'Spaced' is an album that captures your attention with its down and dirty sound which feels that it could have been laid down in late eighties Hollywood. READ MORE
QUEENSRYCHE
DEDICATED TO CHAOS
Released 2011
by Mark Diggins
If you put this on and can put ‘Mindcrime’ or ‘Empire’ out of your mind for a minute you may well be in for a real treat. For me the interesting thing is that this doesn’t sound like our preconceived idea of Queensryche. There’s a breadth of experimentation here that has been lacking in recent years and of course I’m not talking conceptually, I’m talking musically. READ MORE
SAXON
CALL TO ARMS
Released 2011
by Jo Rockpit
So Saxon! We all ike Saxon right? NWOBHM Troopers put out their 19th album and it's really just a little underwhelming. OK so we didn't expect anything new, but to be honest listening to this the path is now so well worn you get the feeling they did this one in their sleep. To be honest it's not a bad album, but it's not a great album either and I can't see you reaching for it too often once the novelty has worn off. Must try harder next time Biff!
SICK PUPPIES
TRI-POLAR
Released 2011
by Jo Rockpit
Sick Puppies, well good luck to them I say. After gaining a massive amount of media attention for the 'free hugs' You-Tube video they got the kind of boost all bands dream of. What you get here is a "generic Nu-Metal lite, paint by numbers, heard it all before" album almost completey devoid of anything approaching originality. I really dislike this, but I'm told they are great live... Cookie Cutter nonsense but closer 'White Baloons' may lead the way out!
KILL APPEAL
VISITATION EP
Released 2011
by Jo Rockpit
There’s a lot to like in these four short tracks and it all points in the right direction. Kill Appeal is not a generic band, they have their influences sure, but they don’t overpower them, they have their own sound and with every member of the band under the age of 20 things could happen for these guys. DRIVE BY TRUCKERS
LIVE AT THE 3rd MAN
Released 2011
by Mark Diggins
Along with Gov't Mule, Drive By Truckers is one of the bands on my "must see live list". This CD is proof for those that need it what a real 'experience' seeing a band live can still be. If you love real american Rock and Roll and just appreciate a fine tune without being all high and mighty about the genre this is music of real substance and soul. Well worth your attention.

GAMMARAY
Skeletons & Majesties EP
Riot Entertainment
2011
By Shane Pinnegar
With a couple of early tunes re-recorded in full metal form ('Hold Your Ground' and 'Brothers' - especially fine here), plus a couple of their favourites done acoustically ('Send Me A Sign' and 'Rebellion iin Dreamland'), this EP serves as a fun reminder of just how good GammaRay can be when on form. Bring on the next album, if it's this good I see a 4 or 5 star review coming their way!
SYMFONIA
In Paradisum
Riot Entertainment
2011
By Shane Pinnegar
Soaring vocals, frantic riffing, searing hot solos and an epic scope mark this gloriously rich album as a winner from opening track 'Fields of Avalon'. There's a sense that this is what Queensryche may have sounded like had they tkaen their debut EP down a more Euro/power metal route. Read The Full Review

A no frills official bootleg of a Japanese show from last year, this double set is notable for featuring ex-Whitesnake man Micky Moody on slide guitar on the band's run through the entire "Demons & Wizards" album. Features a good selection through The Heep's catalogue and fans will find this immensely enjoyable.
Black Veil Brides
Set The World On Fire
Lava/Republic Records, 2011

DAMN!!! I have quickly become a huge fan of these guys since an introduction to their debut, We Stitch These Wounds, back last November. I really liked that album – although I had never previously been a big fan of screamo-metalcore type rock. Something about these guys was different. Maybe it was the attitude. Maybe it was the underlying music. READ THE FULL REVIEW

Warrant
Rockaholic
Frontiers, 2011

Night Ranger
Somewhere in California
Released 2011
by Mark Diggins
Not really a fan of Night Ranger I wasn't really expecting too much from the new album 'Somewhere in California' but the good news for both me and fans alike is that you are in for a pleasant surprise.
Nazareth is a band that has a long history and over the years have influenced a number of very influential bands. For that reason alone it's worth keeping up to date with what they are up to. This sounds like Nazareth, has the riffs and above all the vocals but is ultimately it's pretty disappointing with only the slower 'When Jesus comes to save the World Again's authentic Tex-Mex blues really standing out. Not a patch on the back catalogue.
Thin Lizzy
Live in London 2011
Released 2011
by Mark Diggins
Dodging the whole 'should they be playing as Thin Lizzy' debate is the safest option here. What you get is a double slice of what today passes for that classic band. To be honest Ricky Warwick does a great job and does indeed sound somewhat like Phil, but at the end of the day it is what it is and Live and Dangerous is unlikely to ever be surpassed if you want a real slice of Lizzy. Brave I guess!
URA - KIA
URA - KIA
Jamsync Music
Released 2011
by Mark Diggins
Guitar fueled no nonsense boogie-laced rock & roll is back with Ura - Kia's new release sounding like a band pumping iron as they shred on opener 'Sea of Lies' but that's nowhere near the whole story! There's tinges of bands like Blackfoot and Godsmack in the deep dark heavy sea of blues. To be honest this is one of my favourite albums of the year. 'Queen of Sorrow' puts me in mind of early Aerosmith while the ballad 'Long Time Gone' shows a deft lighter touch. Worth the price of admission.
Tigertailz
Bezerk Live... Burnin' Fuel
Released 2011

Tailz was always more metal than the press gave them credit for and a poor man's Welsh version of Poison they never were. Here we see their greatest album produced live and in 2011 and it sounds great. So sleazy that any respectible person would cross the street if it came towards them on a dark night, it's exactly what we hoped for!

TEENAGE CASKET COMPANY
BEST KEPT SECRET
Jamsync Music
Released 2011
by Mark
Teenage Casket Company is a band you should know about. If ever there was an apt title for an album then BEST KEPT SECRET is it. Combining the best of Glam, Pop, Punk and Sleaze, TCC produce something so immediate and essential you'll wonder how you ever did without it! MORE
This is Journey... but not as we know it. A little darker, and more epic; you can feel the Schon influence here. The songs are longer and we are quite removed from the feel of Revelation that first showcased new vocalist Arnel Pineda who is very impressive here. Songs like 'Chain of Love' and 'Tantra' absolutely shine. A beautifully realised album and a new lease of life. MORE
BLACK STONE CHERRY

Hands up everyone who needs a double live Def Leppard album to make their lives complete? No we are not being facetious we just find it quite remarkable that in the 31 years since their first CD this is the Leps first live album! And yes of course, it's good. Of the bonus tracks new single 'Undefeated' is all Hysteria meets latter-day Aerosmith. 'Kings of the World' is Queen & 'It's all About Believin'' is a nice clean Collen penned rocker. Mmmm.

SHINEDOWN

I'm a big fan of Shinedown and live they are pretty much one of the best sounding bands out there at the moment. This double CD/DVD is something that you just have to have. A mixture of Electric and Acoustic from recent tours its a beautiful way to show off the sheer quality of the songwriting here and also Brent's simply amazing vocals. A keeper!
BLACK N BLUE
HELL YEAH!
Released 2011
by Jo
If you like the no nonsense 'black coffee, straigh whisky' riff of opener 'Monkey' that sets out to dispell the myth that we ever saw the 90's let alone the 2000's then you will love this album. It's pure and simple dirty rock maybe a little less 'hair' than the Black and Blue of old but with all the other late eighties sensebilities intact. They do make them like they used to after all! 'Target' and 'Hail Hail' tick all the rock boxes but we love 'Candy' best!
TORA TORA
REVOLUTION DAY
FNA records
Released 2011
by Mark
The demos of this unreleased 3rd album recorded in 1994 by Nashville's exceptional Tora Tora have been kicking around for many years now: so to say this has been a long time coming would be an understatement. Tora Tora was always one of my favourite 'undiscovered' bands of the early 90's and this album is a fine example of a band who had so much more depth to them than a lot of their contemporaries. If you love Tesla check it out!
FLOGGING MOLLY
SPEED OF DARKNESS
Released 2011
by Mark
I like Flogging Molly and if you are a fan of similar bands like the uber-Irish-Americans Dropkick Murphys then Flogging Molly should probably already be in your collection. 2011's vintage is a particularly good one and sees the band relocating to Detroit and seemingly getting all serious. With lyrics about America's economic dechline it's interesting lyrically. A diverse bunch of songs, standouts like 'The Power's Out' would be classics in any era or genre.

As much as I love Aerosmith its hard not to be cynical. Even more so when the 'Best of the Ballads' contains tracks like 'Fallin' in Love' & 'Living on the Edge' Ballads? Really? You get the feeling the accountant who put this together didn't even bother to listen to the songs and just went by the titles... Oh and there's no 'Miss a Thing' either wasn't that rather big?

STRANGE KARMA
VOLUME 1
FNA Records
Released 2011
by Jo
Australia's Strange Karma could well be onto something: with an album built upon a varied mix of sounds & influences, songs like 'America' are wonderful & gloriously frantic. There's a definite 70's flavour to the harder songs: like The Sweet (originals not the polished hits) blended with Purple & Zeppelin. The other side of the coin is the ballads like 'Time' that ignore boundaries. There's also a healthy dose of Prog in the grooves, it's an assured album for a 1st release, a great adventure of sounds well worth checking out!

It is of course 'The Code' though with vocals from Ronnie James Dio that ices the cake. READ ON...

Compared to their debut released a couple years ago, this sophomore effort really shines. They took raw talent as exhibited on their debut and then honed their craft and grew up in the bars and clubs around Michigan. Essentially, this disc shows how they have improved, but also lends itself to point out these guys are in it to win it. READ MORE

CARUS THOMPSON
CARAVAN
Released 2011
by Mark
In the tradition of great Antipodean songwriters like Kelly and Finn comes Carus Thompson. There's a lot to like about the laid back & often threadbare collection of songs from the thoughful lyrical content & its themes of love, hope and despair to the clever storytelling based on real life events. Musically the Caravan gets a gentle passage floating on acoustic despair & upbeat acoustic light pop-rock equally. It's a beguiling album well worth a dip.
HOLY GOATS
NEXT ROUND
Released 2011
by Mark
A great bluesy groove throughout this makes it almost as exciting as the Black Crowes 'Southern Harmony...' a band the Goats owe a lot of their sound to. If you are a fan of that soulful southern deep fried blues rock then this is a must. Opener 'Something to Tell' sets the template for what turns out to be a damn fine album. Anyone who name-checks my musical hero - Steve Mariott better get it right & in 'Mariott Soul' they do - wonderful stuff!
MODERN SUPERSTAR
UNDER MY SKIN
Released 2011
by Mark
Good hard rock with a modern slant, rather than going retro Modern Superstar comes across like a mix of later Britny Fox, a dash of early Collective Soul and the ballads of 80's Sunset Strip; they do a good job. It's not an album that will blow you away, but it will command your attention & its rather more laid back than in-your-face. With songs like 'Txt U Gud'Bye' 'Generation Star' and a great version of Steelheart's 'We All Die Young' - nice!

Ten years after the classic debut and several more releases under the belt the new one by The Strokes is just a decent album. Coming from the band who 'saved' alternative rock and were lauded as 'changing the face of music' when they emerged its all a bit of a let down really. 'Under Cover of Darkness' is the best track here but it's no 'Last Night'. At times the shadows are still visible but the effortlessness of the sound has gone...

For a band that's been around since 1979 it's perhaps a disservice to say they sound a bit like Maiden at times and in this case it's a very good thing. Best album to date by the band? Quite possibly and a strong debut by new vocalist Brian Allen. Well worth a listen.
GENERATION SWINE
DIRTY LOVIN' EP
Released 2011
By Shane
Stand back: the new Generation Swine EP does exactly what it says on the tin – it’s dirty and sleazy rock n’ f’n roll, and Rockpit HQ is Lovin’ it!
As the first few bars of Over Unity’s debut EP ‘Collide the Space’ course through my speakers, comparisons with Tool and Perths’ own Karnivool spring to mind. This is complex, intricate music played by exceptionally competent musicians, none of whom I’m guessing would have an AC/DC record in their collective collections. READ THE REVIEW
Strike Twice
SELF TITLED
Released 2011
By Lips
Strike Twice originally recorded these tracks between 1989 and 91, and Eonian records has re-issued them more recently. If I had heard of Strike Twice at the time of its original release it’s pretty fair to say I’d have been a fan. The playing is on par or better than most of the bands that ‘made it’ back in the day and the production is world class. READ THE REVIEW

MIRACLE
Released 2010
By Lips
I knew nothing about Nonpoint before this CD fell into my hands but for some reason I had a feeling I was gonna like it…and I do! It kicks off with ‘Shadow’ which has a Dropkick Murphys feel but quickly finds its own identity and from here on its grooving beats and fat drop D riffs throughout. READ THE FULL REVIEW HERE

THE DOGS D’AMOUR
TYLA PRESENTS… IN THE DYNAMITE JET SALOON
King Outlaw Records
Released March 2011
by Mark
Back in the day The Dogs D’Amour was one of the best Rock and Roll bands out there, a great live band with some real magic in their song-writing. ‘Dynamite Saloon’ is as essential for fans and if you are new to the band it's as good an introduction as you could wish for.
As far as bands of the late eighties go Bang Tango is up there with my favourites, they just seemed to have that little extra but sadly their label didn't deliver. These limited edition re-released digipacks from Polish label Metal Mind should go down a treat. If you are not familiar with the magic created on these first three discs from the band then... DOWNHEAD
EP
Released 2011
by Paul
DOWNHEAD are a Rock/Metal/Alternative band born in Milan in 2008 from the combination of different genres and the fusion of the musical backgrounds of its members. This is their self-produced EP for 2011.
The band was formed in Italy during 2003 by Icy X, Kami Plastik and Lex Kaos. Their music style is a powerfull industrial glam-punk sound with heavy influences from Marilyn Manson' and the Murderdolls...
The good news is that along with a slight line-up tweak, Stone Circle now have all the focus they need and more – “Living For The Sunshine” is razor sharp modern AOR which begs to played on radio...
David Johansen and Sylvain Sylvain’s double edged love letter to their joint loves – sixties rock n’ roll and New York – is a blinder of an album, full of sounds you just don’t hear this side of 1975.
‘Rock This House’ according to Jo who listened to this one with me is one of the best rock tracks in years. Not a bad start to the new King Kobra album then! After a few more listens I tend to agree: it would be hard to find an album in recent years that kicks in with something like this: it’s big, it’s bad and it rocks! READ MORE

DISTORTED WONDERLAND
DISTORTED WONDERLAND
Released 2011
by mark
When overnight sensation called it a day olof and axel put together distorted wonderland who surf on the sleazy side of town. there's a lot to like here: elements of the dirtier side of the mid 80's sunset strip and a large part of hardcore superstar with a great production job. not quite top of the tree but definitely a contender and one to watch.
JIMI HENDRIX
LIVE AT WOODSTOCK
Sony - 2010
By Shane
It’s hard to imagine that anyone doesn’t already have This on CD already, but Sony have delivered yet another package of the famous, career defining, JIMI HENDRIX AT WOODSTOCK - which might reek of profiteering if it weren’t trailing such an impressive bunch of bells and whistles. WANTED
TOO HOT TO HANDLE
Eonian Records 2011
By Shane
Indianapolis's WANTED deliver a Skid Row/early Crue vibe with a pinch of Van Halen Over the course of a swag of demos and live recordings
TEAK sounds like a band out of time but in a good way. It’s definitely rock but there’s enough pop sensibilities within the grooves to get the kids and digital down-loaders happy. 'THis Time’ that opens the CD has that eighties English pop-rock base fused with American college radio-friendliness, it’s quite infectious and a great introduction to the band. READ MORE
ROXETTE
CHARM SCHOOL
EMI - February 2011
By Shane
Back in the late 80s through to the mid 90s, Roxette were the enemy to rockers like myself, representing all the yuppie poofy danceyness that teased around on the edges of so-called 'rock music', & I derided them for their gratuitous haircuts and fashionable guitar solos which barely if ever rose above the synthesisers whitewashing their gold plated pop songs... DROPKICK MURPHYS
GOING OUT IN STYLE
Released 2011

Ever since I saw these guys live I have loved them and the Murphys has been around so lang now there's a fair body of work to love. FOREVERMORE
Frontiers Records
Released March 2011
By Mark
Someone told me that this year was the year of the Rabbit, but after spinning this a few times I’m convinced they were wrong – it is very definitely the year of the Snake!
Billed as a “mini album” Quo deliver a new version of their mid-80s hit, value added with five live tracks, a couple of bonus songs from their 2007 album “In Search if the Fourth Chord”, plus a couple of videos. Regardless of whether Quo 2011 are relevant or not, this is an amiably entertaining listen, but ultimately just for collectors.
BLACK LABEL SOCIETY
Order of the Black
Released 2010
By Shane
Zakk Wylde went into this BLS album for the very first time not only no longer contracted to Ozzy Osbourne, but also newly sober – and it shows. This is the first BLS album in ages which has sounded so fresh and vibrant, resonating with energy and life which has been lacking for too long.
This is an interesting one, big heavy metal riffs and geat harmonies. Part industrial, part symphonic rock, part sleaze and part melodic rosk - it's diverse as hell and that may be pefect for you or it may annoy the hell out of you. I fall into the former category, whilst some bands try to fit a market bands like De Van take the opposite stance and just play. well worth checking out. Check out opener 'Another Perfect Day'
ROGUE MALE
NAIL IT
Released 2009
By Shane
Rogue Male is an old fashioned heavy metal band from the times when metal was all huge riffs, screaming solos & melodic choruses. Throw in punk attitude & energy, dip the whole thing in sleazy batter, and you get an idea about the glorious old-school vibe going on here.
Keef turns it up to eleven on this compilation of highlights from his two solo albums with the Xpensive Winos, thrown together with some live tracks and so on – all timed impeccably to coincide with the release of his enormo-selling (and brilliant) autobiography, “Life” (quelle surprise!)
Lauper tries hard on this album to recast herself a legitimate blues-woman, but such is her past that no matter how good a fist she makes of it, I just can't take it with a straight face. Two and a half for trying really hard and doing okay... but it's nothing you'll want to hear again when the real thing is simply so much better.
HELLOWEEN
7 Sinners
Released 2010
by Shane
After unarmed’s brave and diverse collection of older tracks revamped, restrung and rearmed, "7 Sinners" sees the veteran German metalheads back and in rude form. First single 'Are You Metal' is as in-your-face as anything they’ve ever released, ‘Who Is Mister Madman' features a spoken intro by none other than Saxon mainman Biff Byford, and between Accept and Helloween, German metal is back in a big way. Isn't it well overdue time to get these guys Down Under to tour – Soundwave 2012, anyone???
KID ROCK
BORN FREE
Released 2010
by Shane
Has Pammie Anderson’s ex been listening to Jimmy Barnes recently? “Born Free” has a lot more in common with Barnesy’s blue collar solo work than with The Kid’s early rap albums, that’s for sure.
Tesla guitarist Frank Hannon starts his second solo album off with a tip of the cap to both Jethro Tull and Led Zeppelin, a flute solo piercing the pastoral mood evoked by his guitar and mandolin on ‘Hills of California’.
Reapers Riddle are my kind of band, good honest rock with a slight hint of goth rolled in for good measure and hailing from Perth Western Australia. A touch of death intro begins with a sample from a movie, then rips straight into zombiefied... READ MORE
BAD CITY
WELCOME TO THE WASTELAND
Atlantic Records
released 2010
by Tanya
Bad City blasts out of Chicago with an album of catchy, sleazy, pop/rock that has elements of Bon Jovi, Smashing Pumpkins, KISS and Queen in the mix. Its a solid debut - I'm impressed and I think you will be too!
In my take on the Universe the Erotics are a major player, taking the best from a slew of cool bands they serve up dark sleazy, dirty mayhem in a way that is insanely catchy and certainly dark enough not to even contemplate taking them home to meet your family...
There’s a large punk component to Australia’s LUST, who fall on the wrong side of Rock ‘n’ Roll town’s tracks. Shooting straight and true with F-words and attitude the question is do the songs stack up?
I have not enjoyed a Bonfire CD this much since back in the glory days of FIREWORKS and POINT BLANK. Claus and the guys keep on track with this quality melodic release. It's all back again, the trademark vocals, the guitar, everything is lined up. Songs like 'Deadly Contradiction'; 'Save Me' and ballad 'Hold Me Now' are all good enough to have made the cut back in the day and the other 7 new tracks here aren't to shabby either - well worth checking out and rekindling the flame!

FINGER ELEVEN
LIFE TURNS ELECTRIC
Wind Up records
released 2010
by Mark
I shouldn't like Finger Eleven it's just not my kind of band but I find myself drawn in a little here. Sure it's rolling modern rock, maybe a little pretentious, but these guys certainly have the tunes. Coming across like a proggy Bush with pop sensibilities, there's some nice guitar on here and the songs are upbeat I like it, but I couldn't eat a whole one.
KING LIZARD
VIVA LA DECADENCE
released 2010
Mark
Killer riffs, screaming lead vocals, and a very mid 80's sleaze vibe might sound like you've heard it all before and of course you have but King Lizard do this so well you'd swear this was a recording from another era. With just the right balance of songs about porn, sufficient 'F' words strewn throughout and just enough songs with rock 'n' roll in the title this is a record of ball-tearing quality. The UK has produced another fine band.
STACI T RAT
YEAR OF THE RAT EP
Trash Pit Records
released 2010

Take a bit of the New York Dolls, a bit of the Stones, some Iggie, some Izzy and a pinch of good old eighties sleaze and you have a four track EP that hints of great things to come. Standout has to be opener 'Seven Years' with some great Hooker-esques blues and nice harp! Good old fashioned no frills rawk and roll - we like it a lot now where is the album?
WAITING 4 ANDY
BACK IN THE MUD
Out Now!
by Jo
Waiting for Andy is a local West Australian band that just has something about them. Serving up a mixture of styles, but certainly blues based at their core 'Back in the Mud' has a lot going for it and with songs like 'Resolve' 'Journey' and 'Elsewhere' we love where they take the sound. But there's a lot more here as they dabble in traditional Aussie pub rock and dip a foot in the warm waters of Yes-style prog rock too. One to watch.
HELLSONGS
MINOR MISDEMEANORS
Released July 2010
by Shane
On paper it makes no sense at all – metal classics from the likes of Iron Maiden, Pantera, Judas Priest, Skid Row and more, lovingly stripped down and reconstructed as mellow Scando-folk whimsy…
I really dig a lot of new music by young bands, but the latest offering from Rev Theory has TOTALLY blown me away. We are only two weeks into the new year and I have two that I feel will stick with me for a long time ...
DIE WASTED aren’t afraid to declare their love for sleaze metal loud n proud, and like a rhinoceros on Cialis doing unmentionable things to your Mama, this debut cassette (YES – CASSETTE!!!) is as in your face as it gets.
Discovering them only last year when they put together a greatest hits package called ‘Timeless’ Bad Habit certainly caught my attention. 2011 sees them with a new album packed to the rafters with melodic gems.
“I Feel Like Playing” is the Faces and Stones wideboy’s most accomplished solo album yet, by virtue of the fact that, recently re-sober and refocussed, he’s playing to all his strengths, and playing damn well.
So good, actually, that it’s fair to say “Duende…” is an amazing achievement for Pistolero - the re-recorded tunes from his old band show a new depth to the songs. The production is lavish throughout and the bones of 'Rock' are fleshed out with some meaty 'Roll' delivered straight from Pistolero’s soul.
The Quireboys love of Ron n’ Rod’s The Faces was never more evident than on 2010’s fantastic gypsy flavoured acoustic album “Halfpenny Live”, and it went down so well that ...
This debut release from Eye Empire shakes you to your core. This set of eleven tunes leaves no stone unturned in its attempt to get to the hard rock nerve in your soul.

It seems only short time ago that Last Autumn's Dream released the wonderful 'A Touch of Heaven' and now we have a new CD. Due for release in January 2011, but already out in Japan, the question is...
Modern Rock with a bit of depth to it? Take The Killers, Duran Duran, The Cars and maybe a band like Filter and you'll get a bit of an idea. To be honest there's a melting pot of influences here, all mixed in with a bit of pop a-la The Cars. Maybe one to try if you are in the mmood for something a bit different.
THE WAXBILLS
THE WAY IT GOES
Savvy Music
Out now in Australia
by Mark
Anyone with Ray Davies as a hero has to have something going for them and here Nathan Warriner and his power trio The Waxbills have taken alt-rock/pop mashed up with the classic singer songwriter tradition and created an acoutic-led album that that has just that hint of Soul Asylum and a tint of Country rock. Check out: 'Devil's Choir' and my favourites 'Take It' and the wonderful 'Empty Arms Again'. Definitely a band that deserves more attention.

THE DAWNING
Savvy Music
Out Now in Australia

What does a name like Righteous Vendetta conjour up for you? Big riffs? Kick drums? Thrash Metal? You'd be right. If you like your thrash with the what now seems stereotypical cookie-monster/melodic vocals then this is the ticket. Nice songs, cool riffs but far more up Metal Billy's alley than mine.

If you wondered what went into making the classic After The Rain then this is at least part of the answer. You'll be pleasantly surprised by some of the ones that got away!
I like 'Farewell to Arms'. It's definitely a return to form for a band that I had only a casual love for in the past. Shorter songs, with a very in-your-face sound and maybe a little darker overall; this is how TNT should sound. Not a classic but a step in the right direction. Check out 'Ship in the Night'; 'Refugee' and 'Someone Else' if you like them then you'll love this.
