Mark Rockpit’s best of 2011

The New York Dolls

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR

Getting to shoot so many cool bands but the highlight of that? Well Heart came pretty close.  But it was either Joan Jett, Iggy or The New York Dolls that took it! Or maybe ZZ Top, or maybe Joe Bonamassa: I loved them all…

For me this year though, the highlights are easy:  meeting Alice Cooper and Sylvain Slyvain (of the New York Dolls) two of my formative musical influences, the experience was way beyond what I dreamt of when the Rockpit started. The fact that Sylvain also managed to dismiss the often quoted piece of wisdom ‘never meet your heroes’  capped it all, I felt like I’d known him for years, And Alice is of course Alice, interesting, entertaining and the perfect gentleman. Catching the legend Earl Slick one week and the guys from Crashdiet the next was also kind of cool!

Alice Cooper

As far as interviews go I must admit that this year I was spoilt for choice. Starting off with the wonderful Mr Paul Shortino (King Kobra) and Jess from Rock Sugar. We got to talk to heaps of cool people like: Jon from Black Robot, Frankie from Quiet Riot and Joey from Warrant (twice!).  There were some further big highlights for me though, like finally getting to talk to Tyla (Dog’s D’Amour), Danny from Thunder and Mike Monroe! Then CJ Snare (Firehouse); Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake) and of course Sylvain Sylvain (New York Dolls)! But I must admit this year I enjoyed every single interview and would like to thank everyone who took the time to speak to us!

Tyla

Live it’s been a great year:  New York Dolls heading the charge, but a nice trip to SE Asia to see Whitesnake was an experience! Heart was also a big highlight for me – Ann Wilson is the best female singer ever…  But there was also Crashdiet, Iggy and the Stooges, ZZ Top, Joe Bonamassa, Guns ‘n’ Roses and so many more – check out my list!

Crashdiet

Best of all is how great Rock Music was this year: locally and internationally I thought that 2010 would be a hard act to follow but I think we topped it! To see so many local bands up there in the list too is great – after all that’s what we’re about – supporting the music we love and great local live music especially!

As far as albums are concerned who would have thought that a re-recorded and re-worked 80’s masterpiece would top my list this year and that some West Coast AOR would hit number two? The Black Keys, Vain and The Erotics were all up there vying for top spot at different points in the year and in truth everything in that Top 50 is gold!

Joan Jett

LOWLIGHTS

The cancellation of so may Aussie tours dur to local promoters: the debacle of the Warrant/Quiet Riot/LA Guns Australian Tour by Intense Impact (still waiting on you giving us your side of the story Shane Tester, I’ve lost count of how many times that’s been promised now…); and the cancellation of Soundwave Revolution just for starters.

Not making it to the US for the first time in seven years – I miss all you guys!

2011 also saw the 40th Annivesray of Jim Morrison’s death, the 30th of Bob Marley and the 20th anniversary of the death of my musical hero Steve Marriott, also Johnny Thunders, Freddie Mercury and Def Leppard’s Steve Clark. It also marked the 10th anniversary of the deaths of Joey Ramone, John Lee Hooker and George Harrison.

This year we sadly lost Phil Kennemore (Y&T), Gerry Rafferty, Gary Moore, Wurzel, and Jani Lane.

LOOKING FORWARD TO 2012

There’s plenty to look forward to in 2012, but mainly getting back out there again and seeing as many rock shows as possible is again number one priority! Personally:

  1. Getting back to the US this year for Rocklahoma, maybe some Van Halen and maybe catching a few Australian bands over there too!
  2. A third album from Crazy Lixx - 'Riot Avenue' due in April 2012.
  3. More from 'The Erotics' - there's a new EP out soon in 2012!
  4. Finally a new album from Aerosmith, hopefully with some blues and some balls!
  5. Maybe something new from White Flame?
  6. Seeing the Steel Panther guys Downunder!
  7. Some more great festival bills.
  8. A local Perth band making their mark overseas, or maybe a few of them!
  9. Photographing more great live bands!
  10. And most importantly: getting everyone out there off their assess and SUPPORTING LOCAL LIVE MUSIC. Without you local music dies and when it dies prepare for JB and RNB...

MARK'S TOP 50 ALBUMS OF 2011

This was one of the hardest of years to pick a top 50 for me. So many great albums in so many different genres, but all great rock albums.

To be honest anything their in my (ahem) expended Top 20 is in my opinion essential listening.

MOVIES OF 2011

To be honest I didn’t watch a lot of movies this year but these were pretty cool:

“New York Dolls – Looking Fine on Television” is a must for any fan or anyone who wants to know what the fuss was about; there’s also a cool film about the 80’s band Fishbone out: called “Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone” even if you are not a huge fan of the band it’s a great watch.

Also great rock DVD's - Lemmy - The Movie, of course; Slash Live - Made In Stoke; The Answer - 412 days of Rock n' Roll; Rolling Stones - Some Girls, Live in Texas '78; and of course Foreigner - Rockin' at The Ryman

If you like a bit of beautifully crafted action then film of the year must be “13 Assassins”

BOOKS OF 2011

Again not a great year for reading up Rock-wise, I caught up with the Rick Springfield Autobiography which took me a bit by surprise! But that’s from a few years back now.

“Steven Tyler – Does the Noise in My Head Bother You”, in truth did bother me a little, mainly because of its slightly annoying style, but equally for the lack of anything really new in there.

JO's Top 33 Albums of 2011

Keeping the spirit of vinyl alive here's my top 33 - 33rpm's of 2011

There were some great new albums by some vintage acts this year, a heap of great melodic rock and some new names that look set to promise a lot in the years to come.

So hard to pick a favourite this year with both Whitesnake and Journey putting out their best in years and I get to put Def Leppard in my list because of those studio tracks!

If you really want a treat though from a band you've probably not heard of you can't go past either Ragdoll, Mecca, Work of Art or The Magnificent - all great melodic rock!
