PYRAMID OF THE COYOTE
Monkey EMPIRE EP
Released October 2010

With a rumbling bottom end and an attitude belying their relative newcomer status, Perth’s PYRAMID OF THE COYOTE present this eclectic and dark debut slab for due reverence this weekend.

Surprisingly for a band so green, POTC have a fully formed sound which, whilst showing some of their stronger influences, is also pretty unique and individual, not to mention varied. It’ll be interesting to hear where they take their sound from here.

The main thing you will hear from start to finish on this 6 track EP is the unmistakeable joint influences of Kyuss and QOTSA. But there’s a lot more happening here than that – Gary Cornell’s voice is sometimes reminiscent of Glenn Danzig, and there’s some punk and hardcore influences in the mix as well, with hints of Black Flag and The Stooges, especially in the frenzied riffwork from Kely Barcia.

There’s also a roll to the rock that makes it hard to sit still while listening – these guys should kick arse live if the EP is anything to go by.

Check out 'Hail To The Monkey' for about as mellow a sound as these guys are ever gonna get, setting a deep booming tone for the rest of the mini album and featuring a damned catchy chorus melody. The EP’s killer track ‘Self Destruction’ channels the desert sound of Kyuss as clearly as a hot wind blowing out of the great red interior of our fine land, and features another melody that will stay with you for days.

Closer ‘Sheep’ is another memorable standout, with Cornell sounding like he is doing Danzig karaoke, while the band fire staccato bursts of groove through the speakers.

All hail the monkey!.
