PEARL

LITTLE IMMACULATE WHITE FOX

To be honest when this landed I got confused and thought that Jewel had done a rock album, so I spent the first five minutes bemused and questioning her motives, but concluding that it was so good it didn't really matter.

As we all know now Pearl (Aday) is not only Anthrax's Scott Ian's wife, but also the daughter of the mighty Meatloaf and boy does she rock. She also happens to have a great voice and some great songs.

Opener 'Rock Chick' is promising and proves she can wail, the folowing Ike and Tina track 'Nutbush City Limits' certainly rocks it up too but when we get to 'Whore' I'm starting to really like what she's doing.

The softer songs work too and show her range. While 'My Heart isn't in it' is country tinged it is not to the point of parody or because someone has told her to do it for the cross-over potential. It also has some lovely guitar.  The softer 'Anything' accompanied by Jerry Cantrell's backing is even better.

'Lovepyre' is a standout for me as well as the aforementioned 'Whore' for the rockers but in truth the album is a beautifully balanced mix which seemingly owes little to either famous father or husband. If this is rock by osmosis, then everyone should grow up on the road!

What you get here is some very good hard rock. It's nicely 70s infused with a nod to some of the greats, a pinch of country here, some southern rock there and a healthy dose of real R&B - it's a heady mix.

Beautiful vocals throughout and some nice cameos from the likes of 'Uncle' Ted Nugent on 'Check Out Charlie'. You don't often hear albums as assured as this that capture the sound of 'rock gone by' so well.

A real good listen.
