MONGREL
Revenge EP

Released 2009

Mongrel play an unpretentious American old school punk, so don’t expect the pop music and juvenile humour from bands like Blink 182 or Green Day that the US media labels punk nowadays, this is fierce and vitriolic, uncompromising and full of attitude, a la Black Flag.

Guitarist Adam Savage wrote everything here, and whilst not possessing the strongest singing voice, Drew Barker spits and growls with conviction and serves the songs and style well.

‘Butterknife Suicide’ rages hilariously against ‘desperate cry for attention’ faux suicides, and ‘Point a Finger’, featuring Scarecrow Hill’s Tylor Monroe is a great big ‘fuck you’ to those who dare to judge us all.

There’s nothing fancy about Mongrel, but they do what they do well, and there’s a lot here to like. The word on the streets is that Barker has since left the band and a new album is due any moment now, so I’ll be very keen to see where they take their sound from here.
