LAST AUTUMN’S DREAM
A TOUCH OF HEAVEN

This German/Swedish band has been around for some time now and sadly I had never really crossed their paths until now their seventh CD! So I can offer you no potted history, and can’t even recommend anything else they have produced. Coming to this album cold was quite a surprise. I must admit I expected to find a slightly Prog-tinged outfit that sounded like a poor man’s Magnum. That is way off the mark.

I have actually found myself spinning this CD a few times over the last week or so and it still sounds good. Imagine a sort of Journey-lite band with touches of Scandal and you might get a rough idea of the sort of songs to expect.

It’s overall a very pleasing CD if you like a walk on the lighter side of the street. The melodies are full and memorable, the lyrics intriguing and the musicianship excellent. If the album falls down anywhere is that it doesn’t really have that one killer tune to really hook you in, but if consistency is the key then this ticks that box.

Of the songs ‘Top of the World’ does it for me, with its memorable chorus. Though ‘Come Rain or Shine’ and the wonderful ‘Heartbreaker’ are also well worth a listen. In honesty there’s not really a bad song and if Melodic Rock is your bag then you will probably love every track.

The surprise for me though was the cover of the Wizard (Roy Wood) song – ‘See my Baby Jive’ a great slab of 70’s English Glam Rock in its day but not the sort of song that usually gets covered these days. Maybe that’s the point?  It’s a good song, covered well and true to the original but some how it does seem out of place sitting where it does in the track-listing.

The cover of Cheap Trick’s ‘Surrender’ doesn’t quite fare as well. However it is great to see bands like these being covered.

One for romantic candle-lit evenings.
