QUICK shots - january 2010

RINGO STARR – Y NOT

Ringo Starr’s first ever self-produced effort, “Y Not” contains plenty of Beatles references to keep the obsessive faithful happy, including Lennon references & McCartney’s bass playing on ‘Peace Dream’ and Macca’s help on vocals on ‘Walk With You’. Elsewhere songs such as ‘The Other Side Of Liverpool’ reveal a very personal side of Ringo, but his trademark naïve and simple nursery rhyme-ish lyrics and soft, safe rock will mostly appeal to fans of his former band of a certain age.

STAGE DOLLS – ALWAYS

Big in their native Norway (“Always” went straight to #1 on the album charts there upon it’s 4th January release), “Always” is Stage Dolls’ seventh album and is chock full of commercial hard rock from the softer end of the scale – think ‘Summer of 69’ era Bryan Adams and ‘Crossroads’ vintage Bon Jovi. The title track, ‘Highway’s open’ and ‘Saturday Night’ are all enjoyable and an unashamed reminder of any number of 90’s albums lurking in your collection. Good playing, memorable tunes and lovely production all feature and if mid-90’s flavoured soft rock is your thing this will definitely appeal.
