IZZY STRADLIN
WAVE OF HEAT

It’s dressed in crumpled velvet, there’s some dust on it’s sleeve, the smell of age, a little grit thrown in the mix and a half-smoked cigarette in there somewhere too: maybe the faintest whiff of last night’s bourbon in the air, comfortable, elegantly wasted and loose in it’s skin, just so you can hear the bones rattle. And it’s all glanced through a grimy mirror in the back of an old ‘Ma and Pa’ store out on a back road somewhere off 66.

You have to admire Izzy Stradlin, a man who makes music on his own terms: writing and demoing at home, recording wherever he chooses and then throwing it all up straight on I-tunes. As the soul of that early Guns ‘N’ Roses sound I’ve always had a great admiration for the man who had the balls to walk when he did.

Previous releases have varied in quality a little but have always had that sound of true no bullshit blue-highway American rock; and always contained at least a gem or two. On ‘Wave of Heat’ we also see Izzy joined by Duff McKagan on bass, and its great to see (or rather hear) them playing together again.

For me it’s a record with no real standouts: everything here has a place and a feeling and a mood that fits. I guess if you wanted to try a couple of tunes on I-tunes before buying I would suggest something like ‘Difference’ with its tongue-in-cheek lyric and laid-back swagger, like the song is being poured from a bottle into your ears! ‘Waiting For My Ride’ for me though perhaps most exemplifies where Izzy is at the moment. ‘Beat Up’ and ‘Texas’ are pretty cool too.

The album isn’t going to blow you away. It’s too laid back to do that and it doesn’t care for that kind of flash anymore. What it will do for you is show you that it’s not just the obvious and fashionably authentic names that can deliver a real tasty slab of American Rock and Roll.
