NIGHT HORSE
PERDITION HYMNS

Vintage, laid-back, seventies, classic rock, bluesy… all words that come to mind here. Bad Company, Motorhead, ZZ Top, The Black Crowes and a touch of Acca-dacca riffage… That is what is coming out of my speakers at least.

There’s a hard edge to Night Horse and a bit of Lemmy in singer Sam James Velde’s voice that make them something a little bit rougher around the edges than your standard seventies classic rock copyists. That said, here we get an album of peaks and troughs. At its best it is great, at its worst it is still OK, though nothing here is particularly ground-breaking or original, which is kind of the point of it all. Take all your influences add them to a big jar, shake it up and pour it out and hope for the best…

On balance things work well, there’s nothing new as I said, and influences are painted large on the sleeve but the quality is there even if Night Horse haven’t quite put there own stamp on things yet.

Opening track ‘Confess to Me’ is a huge and anthemic, with the twin guitarists doing just what twin guitarists should do. Sam plays Chris Robinson on the slow number ‘Black Cloud’; elsewhere he’s all Southern Rock swagger on ‘Come Down Halo’. It is however tracks like ‘Hard to Bear’ that might be where the band is heading: it’s one of the best songs her. Elsewhere ‘Blizzard of Oblivion’ is much heavier fare and the change works. The nice pairing of rockers ‘Choose Your Side’ and ‘Same Old Blues’ close what has turned out to be a pretty satisfying listen.

Some people will love this album; others will dismiss it out of hand. It might depend on the length of your beard and how much you love the smell of whiskey, but it shouldn’t…
