Hardcore Superstar has had my attention for a long time now. I even remember the first time local station JJJ played ‘Someone Special’ from their first global release ‘Bad Sneakers and a Pina Colada’ which I then rushed out to buy! My how the time has flown! Ten years and 8 albums later, with some great songs under their belt HS seem to be firing on all cylinders again. With the furore about the sound of their last outing ‘Beg For It’ it’s good to see the sound here more like the self-titled release from a few years back, there’s also a return to the sleazier song-writing : we’ve gone back to basics, simplified things again and here we have some massive choruses and some great songs.
‘Guestlist’; ‘Sadistic Girls’ and ‘Last Call For Alcohol’ are instant classics from the top drawer! But it doesn’t all fall apart after these pair there’s plenty more gas in the tank and meat on the pencil: ‘Moonshine’; and ‘Bully’ are sing-along at first listen type tracks and the slow number, the wonderfully titled: ‘Here Comes That Sick Bitch’ works just great and is just the sort of fucked up slant on the ballad we needed!
To be honest the album does tail off a bit at the end but by then it’s already been worth the price of admission. Stick your hand in your pocket and buy this one, you’ll be coming back for more before you know it. Not their best but were getting a lot warmer. Nice work HS guys: this is a Jack-dribbling monster of an album!
